Case Study: Cooling System Diagnosis & Radiator Replacement on a 2008 Ford Transit

1. Vehicle & Issue Introduction

We recently welcomed a 2008 Ford Transit turbo diesel into the workshop at Round Men Automotive, trusted Toronto mechanics known for helping local drivers keep their vehicles running reliably. This Transit had lived a long and hardworking life, clocking up an impressive 480,000 kilometres.

Despite the high mileage, the customer reported no signs of overheating, no warning lights and no loss of performance. The vehicle was simply booked in for a routine service—a great reminder of why regular maintenance is essential, even when a car seems to be behaving perfectly.

Given how many Transits in Toronto are used for delivery runs, trades and frequent short trips, cooling system health is especially important. Stop-start driving and long hours on the road can place extra load on components like radiators and hoses.

2. Diagnosis, Inspection & Findings

During the service, our technicians carried out a standard cooling system inspection, which includes:

  • A visual check of hoses, coolant levels and external leaks
  • Temperature checks using a heat gun
  • Assessment of cooling performance during warm-up
  • System testing to confirm even heat distribution

Using the heat gun, the team noticed significant temperature variation across the radiator, a sign that coolant wasn’t flowing as it should. As shown in the photo above, a section of the radiator was heavily deteriorated—an indication that it was likely the original radiator from 2008.

Internally, sludge and scale can build up over time, restricting flow. Externally, age and corrosion gradually weaken the core. Even though the Transit had “never run hot” according to the owner, this radiator was no longer able to efficiently manage engine temperature.

If left unaddressed, the engine could have eventually faced:

  • Sudden overheating
  • Head gasket or cylinder head damage
  • Reduced fuel efficiency
  • Unexpected breakdowns

Catching the issue during a routine service prevented a costly engine repair later.

3. Repairs, Solution & Outcome

To protect the engine and restore proper cooling performance, the team at Round Men Automotive carried out a radiator replacement. A high-quality radiator was installed to match the specifications of the Ford Transit turbo diesel, ensuring the cooling system could once again operate at full efficiency.

While completing the repair, our technicians checked related components such as:

  • Upper and lower radiator hoses
  • Coolant condition
  • Thermostat function
  • Cooling fans

This ensures the rest of the system won’t place additional strain on the new radiator.

With the replacement completed, the Transit now runs at stable operating temperatures, providing better long-term reliability and safeguarding the engine from future overheating issues.

As an independently owned Repco Authorised Service centre, Round Men Automotive uses reliable parts backed by a nationwide warranty, supported by expert technicians who understand the needs of local drivers in Toronto.

This case demonstrates how a simple routine service can uncover hidden issues and prevent major repairs—especially in high-kilometre work vehicles.
